Comedy

Genre conventions –

  • Main emphasis is on humor
  • Designed to make the audience laugh through amusement
  • Most often work by exaggerating characteristics for humorous effect
  • Include jokes and actions to help make a viewer laugh such as inflicting pain
  • Comedy evolves with time, and have many pop culture reference
  • Traditionally have a happy ending (black comedy being an exception)


Genre conventions – production techniques

  • The Quick Zoom-moves in closely to the subjects face and helps show a character's facial expressions. Usually zooms in to show a funny face or to add emphasis to something that is supposed to be funny.

  • The Camera Bump- the camera bumps into the subject or the subject bumps into the camera. Used as a funny interaction between what is being filmed and the audience.

  • Sound Effects- In older movies, sound effects were added in to make something sound funnier or more intense


  • Good video on comedy through visuals


Institutional conventions – marketing

  • Big publicity stunt- Marketing team makes a funny stunt to get media attention. It usually becomes viral and makes people want to watch the movie.



  • Funny trailer- Make a trailer displaying funny jokes written for the movie, or funny scenes, without spoiling too much of the plot.

  • Play trailer in similar movies- by playing the trailer in a movie theater where there is a similar movie playing, the movie can reach people with a similar interest in movies.

Deadpool

  • A movie involving the audience in many jokes and funny scenes. The main purpose is to entertain the audience with its jokes and cheesy scenes. In the scenes below, Deadpool is seen interacting with the viewers making jokes, and being in pain, which makes the viewers laugh. Many cheesy jokes are also included to add comedic effect.


Ted

  • In the scenes below, there are many jokes added for comedic effects, such as ones involving pop culture references, pain to specific characters, and interaction with the audience. The main purpose is to make the audience laugh and enjoy the jokes.
